Get Informed | What are Trihalomethanes?

Trihalomethanes are volatile organic compounds which include a group of four chemical compounds that are formed along with other disinfection by-products when chlorine or other disinfectants used to control microbial contaminants in drinking water react with naturally occurring organic (humic substances) and inorganic matter in water. These compounds are colorless (maybe a faint chlorine-like odor) and tasteless. The 4 compounds that make up trihalomethanes are: chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform.

To understand what trihalomethanes are and how they differ, consider, first, methane, CH₄, which is a single carbon whose four bonds are linked to four hydrogens.  To make a trihalomethane, remove three of those hydrogens and replace them with three halogens, which is what the “trihalo” part of the name means (trihalomethanes don’t  normally form from methane, itself, but from more complicated organics dissolved in the water, but it is easier to visualize the trihalomethane structures starting with methane).  A halogen (halo for short) is any element from the 17th column of the periodic table: fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine.  Practically speaking, only chlorine and bromine trihalomethanes are found in drinking water.  If all three of the substituted halogens, in what started as methane, are chlorides (the ion that forms from the element, chlorine) then you have chloroform, CHCl₃.  If all three are bromide (the ion that forms from the element, bromine) then you have bromoform, CHBr₃.  If there is one bromide (bromo) and two chlorides (di-chloro; “di” means two) you have bromodichloromethane, CHBrCl₂.  If there are two bromides (di-bromo) and one chloride (chloro), you have dibromochloromethane, CHBr₂Cl.  Since there are four possible combinations of trios of chlorine and bromine, there are four trihalomethanes (found in drinking water).  Note that if all four of the hydrogens are replaced with chlorine, you would have carbon tetrachloride (“tetra” means four), CCl4, which is not a trihalomethane. 

How Do Trihalomethanes become a problem?

Trihalomethanes are formed by the reaction of a strong oxidizer like chlorine with naturally-occurring organic material. These compounds can form during the process of treating the water for consumption or treating the water as part of a wastewater disposal system (the effluent from a sewage treatment plant is usually chlorinated before it enters a river). The primary trihalomethanes of concern in drinking water are chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform.

What are the Health Risks for Trihalomethanes?

In human and animals studies, chloroform, bromodichloromethane and bromoform have been linked to bladder and colon cancer at relatively low exposure; at high exposure there is a link between trihalomethanes and birth defects, other reproductive issues, and damage to the kidneys, liver, and nervous system.

What are the Standards for Trihalomethanes?

The Stage 1 disinfection rules provide a drinking water standard based on total trihalomethanes of 0.08 mg/L. In the 2018 Edition of the Drinking Water Standards and Health Advisories, the EPA provided guidance for the 4 trihalomethanes:

Chloroform - MCL 0.08 mg/L, MCLG  0.07 mg/L, DWEL 0.35 mg/L, Life Time  0.07 mg/L.

One-Day Health Advisory (HA): The concentration of a chemical in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse noncarcinogenic effects for up to one day of exposure. The One-Day HA intended to protect a 10-kg child consuming 1 liter of water per day is 4.0 mg/L.

Ten-Day HA: The concentration of a chemical in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse noncarcinogenic effects for up to ten days of exposure. The Ten-Day HA intended to protect a 10-kg child consuming 1 liter of water per day is also 4.0 mg/L.

Bromodichloromethane -MCL  0.08 mg/L, MCLG  Zero mg/L, DWEL 0.1 mg/L

One-Day HA: The concentration of a chemical in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse noncarcinogenic effects for up to one day of exposure. The One-Day HA intended to protect a 10-kg child consuming 1 liter of water per day is 1.0 mg/L.

Ten-Day HA: The concentration of a chemical in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse noncarcinogenic effects for up to ten days of exposure. The Ten-Day HA intended to protect a 10-kg child consuming 1 liter of water per day is 0.6 mg/L.

Bromoform - MCL 0.08 mg/L, MCLG  Zero mg/L, DWEL 1.0 mg/L

Dibromochloromethane - MCL 0.08 mg/L, MCLG 0.06 mg/L, DWEL 0.7 mg/L, Life Time 0.06 mg/L.

Get Tested |Trihalomethanes

You should get your drinking water tested for trihalomethanes if you are on a regulated water source and you notice a high level of chlorine in your drinking water or if the system reports an issue with managing trihalomethanes. If you are using a surface water source and treating the water with chlorine yourself, then this would be another reason to get your water tested for trihalomethanes. Trihalomethanes are not likely to be present in a groundwater source, unless this source has been disinfected or directly connected to a surface water body that is impacted by a landfill or waste discharge that contains trihalomethane "precursors" or trihalomethanes. Precursors are organic compounds which react with chlorine to form THM's.

Level 1 | Observational Self-Testing

Level 1 Testing is done with simple observations that an individual can make with their own senses such as sight, smell, and taste. These observations can be readily apparent or can be observed as they change over time. In addition, accessible related information about the home can also be used to narrow down the cause of your water issues.

Notes on Level 1 Testing for Trihalomethanes

The only warning sign may be the drinking water has either a strong chlorine smell or the water occasionally smells like diluted lake or pond water. The only other warning sign would be information that may be contained in the Consumer Confidence Report for your regulated drinking water source and intermittent discolored water with or without an odor and if the system has recently announced a boil water advisory.

Observations for Trihalomethanes

If you have city water, you may have a problem with trihalomethanes, if:

  • The water has a strong chlorine odor
  • The original source of the water is from a surface water source such as a lake, stream, or reservoir
  • You reviewed your Consumer Confidence Report and the water supplier has informed you that there are trihalomethanes in the water.


If you have well water, you may have a problem if you repeatedly treat your well by shock disinfection (shock chlorination) or treat the water using a chemical disinfectant containing chlorine.

Level 2 | Do-It-Yourself Testing

Level 2 Testing is Do-It-Yourself testing that can be done in your own home using a Testing Kit. After you’ve done Level 1 Testing, Level 2 Testing can confirm if your observations are correct. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment (see below) or continue to Level 3 Testing.

Notes on Level 2 Testing for Trihalomethanes

There is really no low-cost self-screening test or tool for chlorine by-products in drinking water, but there are dip tests and other meters that will permit you to monitor the total and free-chlorine residual or content of your water and also other general water quality parameters.

Level 3 | Informational Testing

Level 3 Testing is done through an accredited Water Testing Laboratory. With Level 3 Testing, you can order a testing kit that is used to prepare your sample and submit it to the lab. By utilizing a lab, you have the assurance that a certified water expert had analyzed your water sample. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment options (see below) or continue to Level 4 Testing - Certified Testing.

Notes on Level 3 Testing for Trihalomethanes

A number of informational water quality tests include chlorine and disinfection by-product tests. Typically these informational kits use the name or go by a term called "City Water" testing kits, because most cities in the USA use chlorine to disinfect their drinking water.

For Baseline Testing, we recommend that you use Certified Testing.

Notes on Level 4 Testing for Trihalomethanes

If you are conducting certified testing for trihalomethanes, it is also likely you are concerned about other aesthetic problems, nuisance bacteria, nuisance issues, and possibly heterotrophic bacteria. Get Treatment | Trihalomethanes

It has been our experience that regulated water systems that have this problem include systems that primarily use a surface water source or a groundwater source that is vulnerable to nuisance bacteria or a system that has issues with managing the distribution system that results in dead-end legs, stagnant water, periods of very high or very low chlorine residuals, intermittent odors, and intermittent discolored water.

If you operate or manage the water treatment system, we recommend that you consider flushing the system to reduce internal sources of organic material from bioslimes, to change disinfection chemicals, or to modify the disinfection type/dosage. THM (trihalomethane) levels tend to increase with pH, temperature, time, and the level of "precursors" present. One way to decrease THM's is to filter the precursors out with filtration before chlorinating the water. If some oxidation before filtration is required, an alternative disinfectant like potassium permanganate or peroxide could be considered. Note that this may not be an option if prechlorination is necessary to achieve required CT values.  A CT value is the number that is calculated when you multiply the concentration of a disinfectant, such as chlorine,  and the contact time for the disinfection process.  This is typically expressed in units of mg-min/L (time x concentration) (See Look Up Table).

The EPA has indicated that the best available technology for THM control at treatment plants is removal of precursors through "enhanced coagulation". Enhanced coagulation refers to the process of optimizing the filtration process to maximize removal of precursors. Removal is improved by decreasing pH (to levels as low as 4 or 5), increasing the feed rate of coagulants, and possibly using ferric coagulants instead of alum.

If you are a customer, your primary treatment option is the use of carbon filtration, but we DO NOT recommend the use of a "whole-house" carbon filtration system to remove all the trihalomethanes because it will also remove the residual chlorine and expose the water to reinfection.

Short Term Treatment

In the short-term, it may be necessary to work with the water company or authority to have them flush the water lines and consider the use of a point-of-use carbon filter on your drinking water.

Long Term Treatment

A long-term solution can only be implemented by the water company or water authority. However, the consumer could consider installing a system to filter particles from the water, a carbon filtration system to remove some of the disinfection by-products, point-of-use or in-line carbon filters for drinking water faucets and shower heads and, in some cases, a reverse osmosis system on your primary drinking-water tap.

Please note: We are not fans of a whole-house carbon filtration system that would remove all the chlorine from your drinking water. We have found this approach ultimately leads to other problems within the distribution system because of bacterial regrowth.  Therefore, it may be wise to use a Point-of-Entry system (POE- for the whole house) to reduce the levels or a Point-of-Use system (POU - for a portion of the water) to remove trihalomethanes.
