What is Benzene?

Benzene is a highly flammable colorless to a light-yellow volatile organic chemical with a sweet odor that is used in manufacturing, as a chemical solvent, used to produce plastics, rubber, phenol, lubricants, dyes, detergents, some drugs, pesticides, acetone, and as an additive in gasoline. Benzene is released to the environment directly via air emissions from coal petrochemical manufacturing and use, permitted discharges or releases, and accidental spills and leaks from storage tanks and associated with petrochemical development including natural gas development. Benzene is moderately soluble in water, i.e., 1790 mg/L, but when MTBE is present the solubility of benzene in water increases to 50,000 mg/L (Source). Benzene is naturally present in crude oil and released into the atmosphere by volcanoes, oil seeps, and forest fires, but the primary sources includes automobile emissions, cigarette smoking, and industrial emissions. Benzene can cause water to have a taste when the concentration is 0.5– 4.5 ppm (Source).

How Does Benzene become a problem?

Benzene is a problem because it has been associated with acute and chronic adverse health conditions that may include cancer, blood disorders, delayed bone formation, low birth weight, and birth defects. The drinking water standard was set because of the concern for cancer, i.e., leukemia.

What are the Health Risks for Benzene?

Benzene does cross the placental barrier, but the specific health effects are not clear. From animal studies, atmospheric exposure to benzene has been associated with bone marrow damage, delayed bone formation, and low birth weight pregnancy. Benzene exposure can also occur through direct dermal contact and consumption of food and water.

"When benzene is consumed in food or drink, the bulk of the benzene passes through the gastrointestinal tract and enters the bloodstream. When in the bloodstream, the benzene will be stored in fat and the bone marrow. The benzene is metabolized in the liver and bone marrow and ultimately leaves the body in about 48 hours via urination. Animal studies suggest that benzene is associated with cancer, blood disorders (anemia), disruption of the immune system, and birth defects.

Exposure to very high levels of benzene will impact the central nervous system and consumption of benzene can cause dizziness, convulsions, an increased heart rate, stomach irritation and vomiting, and in extreme cases, death. "Long-term or chronic exposure to benzene can damage bone marrow and decrease red blood cell counts, which leads to aplastic anemia with its abnormally low counts of red and white blood cells and platelets" (Source).

What are the Standards for Benzene?

Benzene is regulated as a primary drinking water standard and the MCL is 0.005 mg/L, but the maximum contaminant level goal is actually zero. The standard was set because of concerns related to its inducing cancer in humans. The EPA has a DWEL of 0.1 mg/L (noncarcinogenic) and a Life-Time Health Advisory of 0.003 mg/L (noncarcinogenic).

One-Day HA: The concentration of a chemical in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse noncarcinogenic effects for up to one day of exposure. The One-Day HA is intended to protect a 10-kg child consuming 1 liter of water per day is 0.2 mg/L.

Ten-Day HA: The concentration of a chemical in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse noncarcinogenic effects for up to ten days of exposure. The Ten-Day HA is also intended to protect a 10-kg child consuming 1 liter of water per day is 0.2 mg/L."

Get Tested | Benzene

You should get your drinking water tested for benzene when you suspect your drinking water has been impacted by a petrochemical leak or spill, if you are adjacent to a landfill, manufacturer that uses benzene, or are located near any activity with high benzene emissions. Benzene has a sweet or chemical odor when the concentration is 100 to 1000 times the drinking water standard. If your water has a surface film with a metallic sheen that after being broken up disrupted this sheen comes back together, then you may have a petrochemical problem.

Level 1 | Observational Self-Testing

Level 1 Testing is done with simple observations that an individual can make with their own senses such as sight, smell, and taste. These observations can be readily apparent or can be observed as they change over time. In addition, accessible related information about the home can also be used to narrow down the cause of your water issues.

Notes on Level 1 Testing for Benzene

There are limited few warning signs of a problem with benzene when the concentration of benzene is below or at the drinking water standard. The best screening test is location, location, and location. Are you located in an area that has a historic problem with benzene, petrochemical contamination, or natural gas development?

Observation for Benzene

The primary clues that you may have a benzene problem are that you see a film with a metallic sheen on the water, the water has an odor because of other organic compounds, and you are located near a source of petrochemicals that contain benzene.

Level 2 | Do-It-Yourself Testing

Level 2 Testing is Do-It-Yourself testing that can be done in your own home using a Testing Kit. After you’ve done Level 1 Testing, Level 2 Testing can confirm if your observations are correct. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment (see below) or continue to Level 3 Testing.

Notes on Level 2 Testing for Benzene

We are not aware of a low-cost screening test or meter that can be used to document the level of benzene in your water. Because benzene is volatile, where there are gasoline station leaks or spills, you may be exposed to benzene (and other VOCs) in the air. There are some reliable low cost air quality monitors that can monitor for total natural & synthetic volatile organic compounds causing most odors (TVOC).  Therefore, we suggest considering the following: a Neighborhood Environmental Report (see below), an air quality monitoring kit, and an in-home basic water screening test.

Level 3 | Informational Testing

Level 3 Testing is done through an accredited Water Testing Laboratory. With Level 3 Testing, you can order a testing kit that is used to prepare your sample and submit it to the lab. By utilizing a lab, you have the assurance that a certified water expert had analyzed your water sample. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment options (see below) or continue to Level 4 Testing - Certified Testing.

Notes on Level 3 Testing for Benzene

Most quality informational water testing kits include testing for benzene and other volatile organic compounds.  If you are on a private water source not adjacent to a source of petrochemicals, we would recommend the National Testing Laboratories Water Check Standard.  If you are a city water customer, it is not likely you would have a benzene problem, but we would recommend the City Water Check Standard.  If you are a private source near a petrochemical or industrial development or the Neighborhood Hazard Report suggested a concern, we would suggest the National Water Testing Water Check Deluxe or both of the Tap Score Products.

It is unlikely that a city or regulated community water supply sources would be contaminated with benzene, but this is more likely for private water supply systems or transient non-community systems. This may be a concern if you are located near a leaky underground storage tank, a contaminated site, an area with a known or suspected release, or in an area where there is underground or surface petrochemical storage. Volatile organic compounds can typically be treated and removed from water using a combination of air sparging/ air stripping, carbon filtration, and reverse osmosis, although reverse osmosis is used only as a final barrier in extreme cases.

Short Term Treatment

Because of concerns related to the exposure to benzene via consumption, inhalation, and dermal contract, the primary recommendation is to develop an alternative potable water source and to use bottled water. For trace-level benzene and volatile organic contamination, it may be advisable to use a point-of-use Carbon Filtration system or whole-house granular activated carbon unit. The NSF established NSF/ANSI 53 certification for POU/POE filtration systems designed to reduce specific health-related contaminants, including volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether).

Long Term Treatment

Regarding developing a long term solution, it is critical to understand the source, extent, and nature of the contamination, but also to understand the secondary contaminants that may be associated with benzene. For example, benzene contamination associated with gasoline stations will typically also have elevated levels of iron, manganese, heterotrophic bacteria, some salts, and other organics. Therefore, the treatment system may need to include oxidation/filtration, air stripping or Carbon Filtration, UV Disinfection, and even Reverse Osmosis. In addition, it is also advisable to remediate or mitigate the contamination event or release before implementing a long term solution.
