Carbon County Environmental Education Center is an outdoor education and wildlife rehabilitation facility. Housed in a converted 1920s dairy barn, the center is located on 70 acres of woodland, wetland, and meadow within Mauch Chunk Lake Park. In a 1992 expansion, the building and grounds underwent considerable improvements. Yet the mission and motto remain the same: Conservation Through Education.
CCEEC is the discovery hub for school students, civic organizations, and the general public. It houses classrooms and educational displays, a lending library, children’s outdoor playground, and a small wildlife rehabilitation hospital. Injured, non-releasable raptors are on-site for public viewing at all daylight hours.
CCEEC offers visitors a variety of ways to connect with nature. From a quiet and comfortable library, to outdoor adventures for all ages, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy. The area surrounding CCEEC contains many different habitat areas including meadows, deciduous forest, wetland, lake, streams, agricultural fields and associated transition areas. This diversity of habitat makes for incredible wildlife watching opportunities. Foxes (red and gray), coyotes, turkeys, weasels, squirrels, chipmunks, bears, and deer all call the grounds around CCEEC home. And let’s not forget the oh-so-numerous species of songbirds and raptors found in these areas too.
The trails and grounds at CCEEC are open to the public, free of charge, from dawn until dusk, 365 days a year. After hours group visits by appointment.
